The Centre for Teaching Excellence provides workshops, microteaching modules, classroom observations and other sessions that help prepare graduate students for their teaching roles. Graduate students can attend some of our workshops or choose to participate in our programs such as Fundamentals of University Teaching (open to all graduate students) and Certificate in University Teaching (open to doctoral candidates). In addition, every term we offer workshops for international TAs who are new to teaching in Canada. Graduate students who have taken full advantage of these opportunities have subsequently reported that they had more confidence in their role as TAs and instructors and felt better prepared for university teaching.

The Certificate in University Teaching is a program for PhD candidates interested in pursuing an academic career. The intended outcome of the CUT is for participants to be self-aware, critically-reflective teachers who have gained both theoretical knowledge and skills that contribute to success in an academic career. This free program is open to PhD students in all Faculties. The CUT program comprises three courses: GS 901, GS 902, and GS 903 -- which provide a comprehensive teacher-development experience. Each course must be completed within three consecutive terms. Over 250 UW students from different faculties have completed the program since its launch
in the fall of 1998.

The prerequisite for participation in the CUT program is completion of the Fundamentals of University Teaching program and submission of a CUT Statement of Interest, explaining reasons for wanting to pursue the CUT. To request a CUT Statement of Interest Form, please contact Darlene Radicioni. Meeting the prerequisites does not guarantee acceptance into the CUT program as enrolment is limited.

CUT participants who started the program prior to January 2011 will complete the CUT program under the old regulations.

GS 901 - Preparing for University Teaching

In GS 901, participants begin building reflection skills, theoretical knowledge, and applications to try out in their teaching. Participants attend workshops about teaching and learning in higher education and write reflective, application-based response papers.

Course Requirements (must be completed within 3 consecutive terms):

  • Attend 4 required workshops on teaching and learning (you may not count the required workshops for GS 902 in this total)
  • Write 4 workshop response papers for each of the four required CUT workshops, that are evaluated and accepted by CTE staff

The objectives of the workshop attendance are to have you:

  • Experience, discuss, interpret, and reflect on workshop materials and activities that stem from the higher education research literature

The objectives of the workshop response papers are to have you:

  • Reflect on the workshop material
  • Describe how to apply the material to your own teaching

Response Paper Audience: People who are experts in the workshop topic area but not necessarily in teaching within your specific discipline.

Response Paper Length and Format: 2-3 single-spaced typed pages in 12-point font that include an introduction, body, and conclusion. All response papers should include your name, department, building codeand the title of the workshop. Please submit papers to the CTE Office either in person or via on-campus mail. Electronic submissions will not be accepted.

Response Paper Due Date: Two weeks after the workshop or the classroom observation; late papers will not be accepted; revisions are due two weeks of the date the original was marked.

Continuation Criteria: You may be asked to withdraw from GS 901 if you fail 3 workshop response papers, where a fail is defined as:

  • Having the original submission not accepted and not submitting a revision within one month of the date the original was marked
  • Having the resubmission not accepted

GS 902 - Preparing for an Academic Career

In GS 902, participants investigate higher education theory themselves, further develop applications to communicate to a general university audience, and articulate their self-awareness as a teacher. Participants complete two projects: a research project about a teaching and/or learning issue in higher education, and a teaching dossier. You also attend an introductory workshop about each project and a small group consultation session for each that will facilitate the final preparation of each project.

Course Prerequisite: Successful completion of GS 901

Course Requirements (must be completed within 3 consecutive terms):

  • Attend two CUT workshops, one on Research Projects and one on Teaching Dossiers
  • Attend two consultation sessions, one for your research project and one for your teaching dossier
  • Complete and have accepted one research project about a teaching and/or learning issue in higher education
  • Complete and have accepted one teaching dossier
Continuation Criteria: You may be asked to withdraw from GS 902 if you:
  • Fail the teaching dossier
  • Fail the written part of the research paper, or the presentation part of the mini-workshop or poster

A fail is defined as having the original attempt not accepted and failing to submit an accepted revision within the allowable time, OR having the resubmission not accepted.

GS 903 - Teaching Practicum

In GS 903, participants practice and receive feedback on their individual teaching skills and become more self-aware and critically reflective. Participants have their teaching observed at least two times, receive feedback from a trained observer, and write a reflective response paper on the feedback received for each observation. Teaching observations may be requested by clicking here

Course Requirements (must be completed within 3 consecutive terms):

  • Complete and have accepted a minimum of 2 observation cycles.
  • One observation must be of a lecture to a large class, defined as a class that is large for your discipline (e.g., Psychology = >100, French = >30).
The objectives of the teaching observations and response reports are to have you:

  • Teach at least two times so you have an opportunity to test changes and receive feedback from a trained observer who will identify and explain your strengths (what you should continue to do), your targets for change, and specific ways to improve.
  • Reflect on your teaching in relation to the observer’s feedback, set goals for improvement, and make noticeable positive changes in order to continuously improve as a teacher.
Response Paper Audience: The observer of your teaching event

Response Paper Length and Format: 2-3 single-spaced typed pages in 12-point font that include an introduction, body, and conclusion. Please submit papers to the CTE Office either in person or via on-campus mail. Electronic submissions will not be accepted.

Response Paper Due Date: 2 weeks after the post-observation meeting; revised response papers are due two weeks of the date the original was marked, or another agreed upon date.

Continuation Criteria: You may be asked to withdraw from GS 903 if you:

  • Failure to submit an observation response paper by the agreed upon due date;
  • Have an observation response paper not accepted and fail to submit the revised response paper by the agreed upon due date;
  • Have the resubmission of an observation response paper not accepted;
  • Have two teaching events not accepted.

The Fundamentals of University Teaching (Fundamentals) program is aimed to support all Waterloo graduate students in developing their knowledge and skills as university teachers. The program is open to Master's and PhD students from all faculties.  As part of the program, participants will attend at least 6 teaching workshops and participate in 3 microteaching sessions to practice their teaching skills in small groups of peers. Fundamentals can be completed in one or two terms. Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion issued by CTE. The completion of the program will also be noted on participants' transcripts, under the "Milestones" section.

Please note that the Fundamentals program is a modified version of our former International TA (ITA) Training which has been integrated into the Fundamentals program as of January 2011.

If you are interested in participating or, have any questions, please contact Darlene Radicioni either by email or at ext. 33132.

To register for the Fundamentals program, please complete our online registration form.

Note 1: The Fundamentals program is the prerequisite for the Certificate in University Teaching Program. However, completion of the Fundamentals program does not guarantee admission to the Certificate program.

Note 2: As the Fundamentals program is attendance based, participants must arrive on time and stay for the entire event, be it workshops or microteaching sessions, to receive credit.
